A.W. Tozer is quoted as saying, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” I agree with Tozer, but C.S. Lewis disagreed. He said, “How God thinks of us is…infinitely more important. Indeed, how we think of Him is of no importance except in so far as it is related to how He thinks of us.” I think Lewis makes a good point too, but I still favor the statement of Tozer.
Right thinking leads to right living. If one has a low, improper, unholy view of God they will make all kinds of bad decisions, therefore we need the right understanding of who God is and who we are to be in a right relationship with Him and others. It is also important to understand how God thinks of us because it will shape how we view Him.
I understand that I am a sinner deserving of death and hell. I needed saving from eternal damnation.
God Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and all that is in it loved me so much that He sent His only Son Jesus to live the righteous life that I was supposed to live but couldn’t because I was dead in my sins, then He died the most gruesome torturous death on the cross that was meant for me to pay for my sin and forgiveness. Then He rose from the dead after being in the grave for three days, conquering sin and death once and for all.
I believe Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life and no one comes to the Father except through Him. He came to give me abundant life and by His grace, I’m living it.
That's what comes into my mind when I think about God, and I believe that is the most important thing about me. I love Jesus because He first loved me and forgave me so much and now, I live for Him.
This truth governs my thinking and decision-making, and the way I interact with people, and hopefully, it is reflected in the way I live.
So, I think there is merit to what both Tozer and Lewis said. I think they work together. What do you think?
This reminds me of another important way of thinking that significantly influences our way of life.
How we think about preborn humans reflects how we think about our fellow man and how we think about God.
I’ll go so far as to say that the issue of abortion defines a nation. We are either pro all life for all people or we are pro killing some whom we deem unfit to live. When a nation devalues a specific group of people so much that it makes it legal to kill them, it’s only a matter of time before it deems another group of people expendable.
I’m not going to look the other way ever again. I’m not going to stand idly by as women and children are led to the slaughter. I will stand before God one day and give an account of my life. I want to be able to say I did everything I could to proclaim His gospel and protect His image bearers.
