Be Still and Know...

Be still and know, that I am God. ~Psalm 46:10

There’s never been another time in our life like this, when we're practically forced to be still, and we hate it, we’re fighting it. How many times have we said, if only I had more time to do this or to do that? Now we have it, but we’re dreading it. We’re frustrated and longing for the past when we were free to come and go and do as we please.

In James chapter 4 it says that God yearns jealousy for us. It’s amazing to me that the creator of the universe wants to be with me, and He wants to be with you, and He wants us to want to be with Him. James goes on to say, draw near to God and He will draw near to you. He continues with a seemingly harsh word, but it’s truth. He says, cleanse your hands, you sinners and purify your hearts, you double minded. We are such a very busy people, aren’t we? We’re passionately focused on doing so many things, and a lot of it is important, but we’ve forgotten the most important thing. We’ve left our first love. (Rev 2:2-4)

Is it possible that God has shut down the world so that we would slow down and actually be still and know that He is God?

Is it possible that He would take away so many things that are captivating our attention because they are distracting us from and are barriers to our relationship with Jesus? Could it be that all this is happening so that we would draw near to God and experience Him drawing near to us? I don’t know for sure, but I’m okay either way. You might think that’s harsh and that’s okay too. This is where our faith is tested and our character is forged.

Perhaps this is the time and the day that the Lord has made for us to be still and know that He is God, to remind us that we are dust, little lost sheep desperately in need of a shepherd, broken, weak, naked, blind, dumb, anxious, fearful leper’s who desperately need the Great Physician and the Wonderful Counselor to heal our soul. Perhaps He really has given us this time to draw near to Him, to cleanse our hands and purify our hearts, to repent of our sins and seek His face, and to love Him first, above all else, with all of our being, in all that we do, and love one another they way He loves us.

The only way we can live in peace in these circumstances and be able to do what God asks us to do, is to truly believe that Jesus really is enough.

Clearly, all the things we’ve been trusting and putting our hope in, aren't enough.

  • The government isn’t enough

  • Science isn’t enough

  • Medicine isn’t enough

  • Our jobs aren’t enough

  • Not even our families are enough to complete and satisfy our greatest need.

When our minds and our hearts are truly captivated by God’s love more than anything or anyone else, then we’ll finally be able to, not worry and not fear, and actually be able to rejoice and count it all joy, even in this scary time of uncertainty.
